Divine tragedy (III)

It was only later, once he was sitting down among his people near his hut, when he realised what the true meaning was of the words that had been spoken to him from the loudspeaker.  And thinking about the terrible implications of those words, he was so frightened as he imagined the fury of God's wrath that he felt a trembling inside his innocent and poor human heart.

However, this time, and with the next great occurrence, everything was much simpler than the previous time when God had made the extent of his wrath known on Earth. And it wasn't even necessary to evoke any massive thunderstorms or waterfalls as before. As fate would have it, the mortal blow of annihilation came in the form of a lone pigeon. For, in that strange world that had become so predictable and devoid of any unforeseen eventualities, they had completely forgotten about the existence of birds, and by so doing, had becoming so vulnerable that they had fallen victim to something as small as a pigeon.

Yes. A pigeon. An unassuming pigeon that flew into the city on a beautiful journey from the mountains, and let go of its droppings over a massive building on the ground below. It so happened that the roof of the building was open on that day because it had been declared a sunny day.  The pigeon dropping fell onto a miniscule photocell in the main engine room inside the building.  Immersed in the pigeon dropping, the photocell was inhibited from registering that the solar batteries were fully charged several hours later. And that was how the Energy Department in the city N-416 exploded into a massive eruption… a grim example of how fragile technology is in the face of nature's forces.

This hapless accident in turn resulted in the total failure of the varoius energy substations in the nearby cities, which ended in huge explosions and powerful forces of destruction. These chain reactions eventually reached the radioactive mines, which errupted and exploded with such a terrifying force, that it caused the disintegration of the landscape and created massive craters on the earth, pushing up the ground to form new mountains far and wide. The walls of the massive water tanks burst open and the water gushed over the Earth, instantly drowning everything in its way. The system that had been controlling the equillibrium of the Earth and its rotation malfunctioned because of the amount of water rapidly covering the land.  As time went by, this malfunction triggered the upstart of the Earth's natural cycles and the return of its seasonal changes.  Finally, when the hurricanes that had been caused by the catastrophe had calmed down, new, fresher winds and breezes blew again across the land with a newfound freedom.

Yes, a pigeon was enough to kill all those men, and only because they had already been killed long ago by their own engines, mechanism and machines. The only place that remained intact was the former park of Gluchistan: an ark that had been formed by the barriers of the surrounding mountains. It was protected from explosions because they had no energy stations. Adn it was out of danger from floods because they had no tanks and their land hadn’t been flattened. Their caves were the perfect protection for the inhabitants and their animals during the forty days of hurricanes and disasters.

And much later, when Noah finally had the courage to go outside, he found before him a whole new world. The sun was shining over an awesome landscape of hills and lakes, of valleys and waterfalls, beaches and cliffs, all surrounded by a salty breeze coming from an inmense new ocean. Soft clouds were casting shadows in the horizon. The soil was ready to burst, as it fertilised the new seeds that were about to grow.

And the wind! The old man stood up, straightening his body, and satisfied, he closed his eyes, feeling the breath of new life all around him. The animals ran down to their new wilderness, with a hungry curiousity to explore their new kingdom. Meanwhile, the new mankind set out on their path downhill.

But the patriarch couldn’t immediately follow his people down the hill. With blood pumping through his veins, and slightly breathless - his body couldn’t afford any further effort - he looked out over the scene below, satisfied that once again, as it had been throughout all the ages, the adventure of life had started one more time.
